Best Family Things to do Near Pwllheli

25 July 2024

With the school holidays once again on the horizon, the challenge of finding new and exciting activities to keep the kids entertained is once again upon us.

However, if you are holidaying with us at Gimblet Rock Holiday Park, you will find that there are plenty of things to do in Pwllheli for families, with something to appeal to people of all ages and interests.

To help make your lives a little bit easier during this period, we thought we’d put together a list of what our on-site experts believe are the best family things to do near Pwllheli ahead of your next trip to the region. Without further delay, let’s get to number one…

1. Pwllheli Beach

You can’t make a trip to Pwllheli without paying a visit to its wonderful beach which is directly accessible from Gimblet Rock Holiday Park and runs all the way to Llanbedrog. With the beautiful promenade running alongside, it is a fabulous destination for a scenic coastal walk.

You can enjoy these walks with all members of your family, with Pwllheli’s south beach being completely dog friendly throughout the year with the exception of a very small section of the beach which is off limits to pets between April and September. This shouldn’t prove too much of an obstacle, as you can simply take to the promenade for this brief section of the walk.

There are plenty of facilities to be found here with the beach being just south of Pwllheli’s vibrant town centre which is filled with fabulous eateries made up of cafes, bars and restaurants. You can even grab a bag of fish & chips to make it a proper British seaside day out.

Other facilities available along the promenade include toilets, a children’s play area and even a skate park so you won’t have any problems keeping the children entertained.

2. Glasfryn Parc

Located just six miles away from Gimblet Rock Holiday Park is the ever popular Glasfryn Parc which genuinely has something for all ages. Here you can unleash your inner Lewis Hamilton on the thrilling outdoor go karting circuit which has karts that are suitable for smaller children in addition to teenagers and adults.

There are also a number of water sport activities to be enjoyed here, with visitors able to try their hand at paddleboarding, kayaking or even take on a fantastic inflatable obstacle course. If you fancy something a little more chilled, then you may prefer to take on coarse fishing at the venue.

Looking for an activity that all members of the family can get involved in? Then why not have a game of ten pin bowling in the on-site complex which is also home to a childrens soft play area and mouthwatering eatery.

3. Plas yn Rhiw

If you are looking for something a little more educational then we would highly recommend paying a visit to Plas yn Rhiw.

This 16th century manor house provides tourists with the opportunity to better understand the lifestyles of those who were lucky enough to reside in such properties during the Georgian period. In the case of Plas yn Rhiw this includes the Lewis family whose ancestry could be traced all the way back to the 9th century King of Powis.

Apart from the contemporarily dressed house, the ornamental garden justifies the entry fee all by itself with its stunning plantlife and remarkable views which it affords looking over the Lyn Peninsula.

4. Oriel Plas Glyn-Y-Weddw Arts Centre

Continuing with the theme of family attractions in Pwllheli which celebrate the culture of the region we have Oriel Plas Glyn-Y-Weddw Arts Centre. The venue regularly refreshes the art works that are on display every 6-8 weeks, ensuring that no two visits need ever be the same.

The only permanent exhibits are collections of Swansea and Nantgarw porcelain. Although pottery has been crafted in Wales for generations, porcelain was only manufactured in the country for a few short years in the early 19th century. These are some of the few remaining examples of these works.

All of the art works are housed within a magnificent Victorian Gothic Mansion which is every bit as impressive as the collections that are on display. The same goes for the on-site cafe which won the prestigious 'Little Gem' award at the Royal Fine Arts Commission Trust Building Beauty Awards.

5. Funland Pwllheli

Now for something a little less intellectually challenging. Funland Pwllheli is situated right in the middle of the seaside town and has remained a popular haunt for families for over 60 years.

This family run establishment has something for all members of the family, with traditional seaside amusement arcades, fairground rides, dodgems, go karts, a ghost train and much more besides.

You will be able to pass a fair few hours here with no trouble at all. We would also recommend paying a visit to the on-site cafe which serves filling meals and refreshments throughout the day.
