Best Places to Visit in Wales in October

29 August 2024

We may be moving out of the summer season, but there are still plenty of great things to do and places to visit in Wales in October with everything from horrifying Halloween scares to fabulous food festivals.

If you are planning to stay with us at Gimblet Rock Holiday Park during this period, we thought we would make your lives a little easier by putting together a short list of the best places to visit in Wales in October so that you can arrive on your vacation with a clear idea of what you will be doing and when you will be doing it. Without further delay, let's get down to the list…

Ffear Fforest - Zip World, Betws-y-Coed
The tail end of October is of course synonymous with Halloween and there are plenty of things going on in Wales to mark the occasion

One of the most highly anticipated is unquestionably the Ffear Fforest event at the Zip World site in Betws-y-Coed. Running from the 11th October until the 3rd November, the event takes place from 7:30 pm each evening and challenges participants to complete the various Zip World activities that are available in the forest during the dead of night whilst being hounded by a plethora of terrifying clowns.

You will have the opportunity to ride the cursed coaster and complete the bouncy net obstacle course as part of the package with tickets costing £28 per person. You are able to take on the additional activities that are available at the venue including Nightfall where you will be ejected by a set of trap doors at the top of a 100 foot tower. However, this does come at an additional cost.

Halloween Fun Run at Porth Eirias, Colwyn Bay
Another Halloween event taking place in Wales which is significantly less scary is the Halloween fun run which is taking place at Porth Eirias on Saturday 26th October from 9 am.

Unlike the aforementioned Zip World scare fest, this is much more of a family event with separate races arranged for adults and children. The older members of the family will be faced with a 10k fun run along the glorious North Wales coastal path, while the children are challenged to take an alternate 1k route.

The race will commence from the Porth Eirias Watersports venue next to the Bryn Williams restaurant on the Colwyn Bay seafront. Entries cost £16 for adults and £6 for children, with participants encouraged to dress up in the wackiest Halloween outfits possible.

Llangollen Food Festival, Llangollen
A significantly less daunting place to visit in Wales in October is Llangollen which will once again be hosting its annual Food Festival on the 12th and 13th October.

Featuring some of Llangollen’s most accomplished food and drink producers, you’ll have the opportunity to try samples of the tastiest produce, watch live demonstrations from the experts and enjoy some fantastic live entertainment put on by local bands, solo performers and DJs.

The event will take place across the town, including at the famous Llangollen train station, town hall, Centenary Square and Market Street. The Great British Bake House, Cheesecake Bliss, Cariad Gin, Doughson’s Handmade Pizza and the Conwy Brewery are just a few of the many exhibitors to have been confirmed for the event so far. This is definitely a must visit for foodies.

Plas yn Rhiw
Alongside the many events that are taking place in Wales during October, there are also a wide array of all-weather attractions available in the region. This includes a number of sensational stately homes such as Plas yn Rhiw which is less than a 30 minute drive away from Gimblet Rock Holiday Park.

This 17th century manor house was constructed by the Lewis family who were descendants of a 9th century King of Pows. It is unquestionably one of the hidden gems of North Wales with house visitors able to learn more about the various inhabitants of the house over the years including the Keating sisters who helped to restore the property during the mid 20th century.

A lesser known fact about the house is that the remodelling during this period was aided by a close friend of the Keating sisters called Clough Williams-Ellis. Williams-Ellis was the mastermind behind the stunning Portmeirion village and his design touches can very much be felt throughout the property.

If the weather is permitting you can also take a walk in the broadleaf woodlands or meander around the ornamental gardens where you can enjoy spectacular views overlooking Cardigan Bay.

Glasfryn Parc, Pwllheli
If you are staying with us at Gimblet Rock Holiday Park during October half term and looking for ways to keep the children entertained, then we would strongly recommend making a trip to the nearby Glasfryn Parc.

Less than a 15 minute drive away from our resort, Glasfryn Parc is another ideal all-weather attraction with a plethora of fantastic activities available on-site which take place both in and outdoors. One activity which certainly isn’t weather dependent is the outdoor waterpark where you can take on the thrilling obstacle course or try your hand at kayaking and paddleboarding. Alternatively, you can head into the on-site complex and enjoy a friendly game of ten pin bowling or sit back and let the children burn some energy in the soft play area.

One of the activities that is dependent on the weather is the thrilling outdoor go-karting circuit which has senior and junior level karts for children ages 8 and over. Younger children aged 3+ meanwhile can enjoy a passenger ride with a parent or guardian in one of the two seater racer.
