Top 5 Best Bars & Pubs in Pwllheli

23 July 2024

The friendly local community in Pwllheli always provide tourists and holiday makers with a warm Welsh welcome and this is no more in evidence than in their local pubs.

Given the relatively small town of Pwllheli, there are quite a few pubs to choose from with everything from pet friendly pubs, all the way through to traditional ale houses.

We’ve put together a list highlighting some of the best pubs in Pwllheli and have endeavoured to take into account the varying requirements of our holiday guests. Irrespective of whether you are looking a pub and restaurant in which to dine with the family or simply enjoy an ice cold beer by yourself on a warm summer's day, there is an option for you in our list:

1. Penlan Fawr Inn

Penlan Fawr Inn is unquestionably Pwllheli’s oldest public house, and perhaps even the oldest in the whole of Wales! The building was constructed in the 16th century but wasn’t turned into a pub until 1622.

There is still a very traditional vibe here with a roaring log burner fire which is perfect for those colder winter months. However, efforts have been made to bring the pub into the modern age with Sky Sports TV coverage, pool tables and darts boards all added to ensure that you remain entertained throughout your visit.

Penlan Fawr Inn also hosts regular live music evenings featuring performances by some of the region's top vocalists and bands.

2. The View in Pwllheli

Providing guests with unrivalled views overlooking Pwllheli Marina from its modern outdoor decking area, The View is the perfect place to relax and people watch. You can choose from popular lagers such as Carling, refreshing ciders and sensational cocktails in addition to a range of soft drinks.

The View also regularly invites guest catering teams in with the local Big Dog Pizza and Mei's Fusion Food being examples of just a few of the many different types of food that are made available to customers.

3. The Pen Cob

The Pen Cob is situated close to Pwllheli railway and is the local Wetherspoon’s. In keeping with the successful Wetherspoon’s formula, The Pen Cob occupies a historic building which has been a mainstay in the centre of the town for over 100 years. Having long been the Bon Marche shop, it has subsequently been renovated to create the popular public house that it is today.

Just because it is a Wetherspoon’s doesn’t mean that it should automatically be discounted with The Pen Cob providing customers with a wide selection of very reasonably priced drinks and meals amidst clean and modern looking interiors.

4. Venu

If you are looking for a sports bar in Pwllheli, then look no further than Venu which occupies a prime location on the Pwllheli harbour. There is a large outdoor seating area which allows you to take full advantage of these seaside vistas.

However, it is the inside of the bar that will be most of interest to sports fans who are looking for somewhere to keep up to date with all the latest action. With a large projector screen and choice of flat screen TVs to choose from across the interior of Venu, you are sure to catch every second of the action whilst soaking up that irreplaceable sporting atmosphere.

When it isn’t serving as a sports bar, Venu is transformed into a popular nightclub with special guest DJs making an appearance most weekends.

5. Whitehall Pwllheli

Last but certainly not least is Whitehall Pwllheli, a pub which is situated in a grade 2 listed building which has been owned and operated by the same local family since 2010.

During this time it has established itself as one of the finest combined Pwllheli pubs and restaurants serving an exquisite cuisine which has been freshly prepared using local ingredients. There are separate breakfast, lunch and evening menus available here in addition to a popular Sunday lunch.

While the food is the real highlight, Whitehall Pwllheli still provides guests with a welcoming atmosphere and a wide selection of drinking options with beers, ciders, wines and spirits.
