Top 5 Best Pwllheli Walks

12 September 2024

With its coastal setting on the beautiful Llyn Peninsula, Pwllheli is one of the best rambling holiday locations in North Wales with a plethora of scenic walking routes just waiting to be explored.

Irrespective of whether you are a seasoned rambler looking for a new challenge or a family looking for a slighter shorter route to accommodate those with smaller legs, you are sure to find a Pwllheli walking route that is right for you.

We’ve put together a short list of what we consider to be five of the best Pwllheli walks, taking into account the various requirements of the holiday makers who stay at our luxurious Gimblet Rock Holiday Park. We’ll start with a Pwllheli walking route which starts right on our doorstep…

1. Pwllheli Promenade Circular Walk
Gimblet Rock Holiday Park is located just across from Pwllheli Marina which is where this short 4 mile circular walk commences.

From here you walk along the stunning Pwllheli promenade and onto the sand dunes. Make sure that you pause for a moment during this stretch of the walk to admire the stunning views of Cardigan Bay and Snowdonia in the distance.

Once you have reached the sand dunes, you should then start to loop back through the town as part of your return trip. There will be plenty of places to stop for refreshments here, with Pwllheli town centre being home to a number of fantastic cafes, pubs and restaurants.

2. Pwllheli to Llanbedrog Coastal Walk
Another scenic walk to be enjoyed along the coastal path takes you from Pwllheli all the way through to Llanbedrog.

This six mile one way trip will require you to traverse beaches and woodland, taking full advantage of the many stunning natural features which make Pwllheli so popular. It is also more often than not a much quieter route than the likes of the Pwllheli Promenade Circular Walk, making it ideal for those who are looking to soak up a little tranquillity.

3. Plas yn Rhiw Woodland & Gardens Walk
Plas yn Rhiw is one of the best historic attractions to visit in Pwllheli, with this National Trust owned property providing tourists with a fascinating insight into the lives and times of the many inhabitants of the property since its construction in the 17th century.

Alongside the manor house is a stunning ornamental garden and woodland which is brimming with plant life including spectacular bluebells which are best admired during the spring season.

There is a short 3 mile circular walk to be enjoyed here taking in these magnificent grounds and the wonderful views overlooking Hells Mouth. The short distance makes it perfect for families and once your walk is complete you can then treat yourselves to a refreshing beverage or light bite at the highly recommended on-site tea rooms.

4. Abererch Sands Walk
Another Pwllheli walk commencing at Gimblet Rock Holiday Park is the 3 mile out and back route which takes ramblers from the gates of Gimblet Rock all the way to Abererch Beach; a 4 mile long private beach which is a hotbed for watersport activities.

This is a great option if you are looking for a quiet Pwllheli walk where you can admire the stunning coastal vistas including views overlooking the nearby Tremadog Bay.

5. Lon Cob Bach Nature Reserve
This particular route will prove to be an absolute delight for animal lovers thanks to the wide collection of wildlife who call this nature reserve home. While the waters are filled with fish such as kingfishers and otters, the reserve is also an excellent spot for bird watching with heron, oystercatchers, mallards and swans all likely to be found on-site.

The nature reserve is relatively small, resulting in a circular walk which is just 1.5 miles in length. However, this is ideal for families with small children who can be kept entertained by pointing out the wildlife on-site.
