Best Rainy Day Activities in North Wales

19 September 2024

Looking for things to do in Wales in the rain? Then fear not, because there are plenty of options available; particularly if you have booked a holiday in North Wales at Gimblet Rock Holiday Park.

In fact, there are a plethora of rainy day activities in North Wales that the whole family can enjoy in the region around our Pwllheli holiday park. Irrespective of whether you are looking for a fun joint activity to showcase your sporting prowess, or a fascinating museum where you can learn more about the history of the region; you are sure to find an attraction that is right for you.

Let’s start off with an indoor attraction that is right on our holiday park doorstep…

1. Glasfryn Parc

Located just up the road from our Pwllheli holiday park is Glasfryn Parc. This is the ultimate all weather attraction, with plenty of indoor and outdoor activities available which can be completed in almost all weather conditions.

The on-site leisure complex for instance is home to a fun ten-pin bowling alley where you can enjoy hours of fun together as a family. With the option to enjoy on-site fast food, snacks and drinks, you can make a real day of it irrespective of the weather conditions outside. Here you will also find a soft play area, which is another great way to fill a couple of hours if you are looking for ways to occupy energetic children.

If you aren’t too worried about getting wet, then you can also take advantage of their outdoor waterpark. Here you can take on their challenging lake based obstacle course or even learn how to paddleboard. Located just a few miles up the road from our resort, Glasfryn Parc is ideal if you are looking for rainy day activities in North Wales that can be enjoyed by all ages.

2. Zip World

Another great destination for rainy day activities in North Wales is the Zip World site in Llechwedd.

More often than not, the activities at the original Zip World site in Penrhyn Quarry will be ruled out in the event of inclement conditions. However, there are no such worries at Llechwedd which is home to the world’s first underground crazy golf course and also a thrilling underground trampoline course named Bounce Below which fills an area twice the size of St Paul's Cathedral!

Another Zip World site which is great for those looking for rainy day activities in North Wales is located in Conwy. Here you will be able to take on climbing walls, high ropes climbing courses and also take advantage of a soft play area which is specifically crafted for the smaller members of the family.

3. Anglesey Sea Zoo

If you don’t consider yourself to be much of an adrenaline junkie, then you may prefer to pay a visit to Anglesey Sea Zoo in Llanfairpwll. Here you will find over 150 different species of sea life at a facility which claims to be the largest aquarium in Wales.

The aquarium has over 40 different tanks to be observed, all of which are indoors and thus protecting you from the elements. You’ll be able to see everything from the fairly run of the mill sea bass and plaice, all the way through to the far more exotic moon jellyfish and sea squirt, both of which look like they have come from another planet!

You can make more of a day of it by dining at the on-site Rockpool Café which serves exceptional breakfasts and plenty of lunch options including pizza, paninis and sandwiches. If you are looking for things to do in Wales in the rain, then Anglesey Sea Zoo must be right at the top of the list.

4. National Slate Museum

Another educational but fun attraction to consider on a rainy day in North Wales is the National Slate Museum which is located in the disused Dinorwic quarry near Caernarfon. This is roughly a 50 minute drive from Gimblet Rock Holiday Park, but well worth the trip whilst you are in the area.

Here you will learn about the slate industry which dominated the North Wales region in the latter days of the Victorian era. You’ll be able to see first hand the kind of working conditions that employees had to deal with, as well as having the opportunity to see some of the factory equipment in motion. This includes having the chance to observe one of the largest remaining water wheels in the country.

There are also fascinating exhibits here showing the typical home lives of employees who worked in the slate industry. This includes the Chief Engineer and Quarrymen’s homes, both of which have been reconstructed stone by stone to replicate the true conditions that people of the era would have experienced.

5. King Arthur's Labyrinth

Winner of a TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Award, King Arthur’s Labyrinth is the perfect destination for a fun family day out.

Located underground amidst the mountains of Snowdonia, this is a truly atmospheric storytelling adventure where you will be guided around the underground caverns by a hooded dark age boat man. You’ll hear ancient tales about the two dragons who lived beneath the castle of King Gwrtheyrn and also the ancient Battle of Camlan where King Arthur took on his evil nephew Mordred.

While these tales must naturally be taken with a pinch of salt, the stories are brilliantly told and sure to engage children of all ages.
