Best Theme Parks in North Wales
If you are looking for theme parks in North Wales, then you are in luck as you will have plenty of thrilling venues to choose from.
While these adventure parks in North Wales are not on the scale of Alton Towers or Thorpe Park, they still offer plenty of thrills with something to appeal to people of all ages and all members of the family.
So, for all the thrill seekers who are planning to book a holiday at Gimblet Rock Holiday Park, we thought we’d put together a list of the best theme parks in North Wales so that you have a few options to tick off your to-do list on your next visit to the region.
1. Greenwood Family Park - Y Felinheli
Greenwood Family Park is probably the closest thing we have to a fully fledged traditional theme park in North Wales. Located in Y Felinheli, which is roughly a 45 minute car journey away from Gimblet Rock, it is well worth making the trip to Greenwood which was voted the best family attraction of the year in Wales in a recent poll by Visit Wales.
One thing which differentiates Greenwood from other adventure parks in North Wales is its commitment to the environment, with all of its rides having an eco relevance. Its largest roller coaster for instance, the Green Dragon Roller Coaster, is officially the world’s only people powered coaster. All riders are asked to climb a set of stairs and then enter a booth before riding. This booth is gradually lowered, with the energy created from this being used to power the ride. You can therefore have fun without compromising your ethics and provide children with important environmental learnings.
In all honesty, the vast majority of rides on-site are tailored towards smaller children who are sure to love attractions such as the pedal powered Moon Karts and solar powered water slide. There are also a number of playgrounds in addition to the forest school which provides a range of activities under the tuition of some of the parks qualified rangers
2. Zip World - Llechwedd
The ever expanding Zip World now has a number of different adventure parks in North Wales, making it difficult to decide which Zip World venue is right for you and your family. We’ve placed the Zip World site in Llechwedd as our number one recommendation on this list as we believe it provides something for all ages. For instance, the original Zip World site in Penrhyn Quarry (Spoiler Alert! We will mention this later) offers some thrilling adventures but does not cater for younger children.
Almost all of the attractions at Zip World in Llechwedd are located underground with children of all ages sure to love the trampoline course which covers an area twice the size of St Paul Cathedral. Older children and adults meanwhile may prefer the underground climbing course where participants need to navigate their way through a series of caverns in the historic slate mine. This does require significant stamina and bravery as you work your way across nooks, crannies, tunnels and chasms.
Alternatively, all the family can get together and have some fun on the world’s first underground crazy golf course. With 18 holes spread over four floors, this will take up a significant chunk of your day which, whilst combined with the other on-site activities, makes the 50 minute drive to Llechwedd’s Zip World site from Gimblet Rock well worth it.
3. Gypsy Wood Park - Caernarfon
Spread over 20 acres of woodland, Gypsy Wood is the perfect adventure park in North Wales for small children. On-site they will be able to ride a miniature railway, get their hands on some miniature quarry digging equipment, navigate their way around a challenging maze, have fun in the play areas, meet the friendly on-site farm animals and much more.
You can make a real day of it here, with Gypsy Wood also having its own on-site cafe where you can choose from a wide selection of snacks, cakes, ice creams and both hot & cold beverages. This is the ideal place for the adults to rest as the children have fun.
Located just outside of Caernarfon, roughly 35 minutes away from Gimblet Rock Holiday Park, Gypsy Wood Park really is a must visit for families with small children who are staying at our resort.
4. Zip World - Penrhyn Quarry
Another Zip World venue that is worthy of inclusion on our list of the best theme parks in North Wales is their original base in Penrhyn Quarry. This is of course famously home to the world’s fastest zip line, with thrill seekers likely to reach speeds of up to 100 mph as they fly along a 1.5km long zip line amidst the eye-catching quarry.
However, Zip World hasn’t been sitting still. There are now plenty of other on-site attractions for visitors to take advantage of. This includes their thrilling Quarry Karts activity where you can unleash your inner Lewis Hamilton as you fly along a downhill circuit filled with various obstacles that you have to traverse.
Both of these activities are really only suitable for adults. While this Zip World site isn’t great for families with children, it is perfect for couples or groups of friends who are looking for a little adrenaline fuelled fun.
5. Funland Pwllheli - Pwllheli
Last but not least is Funland in the centre of Pwllheli. You won’t even need a car to get there, with Funland being just a 5 minute walk away from Gimblet Rock Holiday Park.
This is another adventure park in North Wales that is ideally suited to smaller children with there being a number of traditional fairground rides, electric go-karts and roller coasters. There are plenty of indoor activities too making it a great all weather attraction in Pwllheli.
Indoor you’ll find traditional seaside amusement arcades favourites such as penny and fruit machines, computer games and air hockey tables. This ensures that the adults can have fun too.
You can also grab a bite to eat at the on-site cafe. Portions here are large and not exactly on the healthy side, but a great option if you are looking for some tasty, freshly cooked food. Their full Welsh Breakfast is a particularly favourite amongst early risers.
